A WILD RIDE

Nathan pointed the wand at the hat, and pushed his mana through it. There was a rush of heat through his arm as the talisman sucked a good chunk of mana and spawned a twisted beam that seemed to slither its way through the air like a snake or a worm until it contacted the hat and latched on. The hat shook violently like someone stuck it into a paint shaker before the pink beam ceased and the last of it followed the same crooked path into the still trembling hat.

Nathan felt a wave of dizziness as his headache intensified. It felt like someone was crushing his skull with sharp icy pincers and using them to pull him down into a frozen lake.

He glanced at his mana, shivering. It had dropped some more, but not a massive amount. Halfway had to be some kind of threshold. It seemed like every time he pushed past, he would wish he hadn’t. Luckily, he could already see his mana level trickling upward. He had to really look, but it was happening. He just had to wait, and the headache would recede.

Something patted him on the shoulder. It was the hat.

“Hey,” he said, rubbing his aching temples as he put the wand back into his bag. “So I guess that color means mind control or something.”

Thumbs up.

“Does it also work on people?”

Thumbs up.

“Ah,” Nathan said. That was interesting, though it had used quite a bit of mana just to do the hat. A more complex thing like a huskborn or a voidcursed would likely cost more, a lot more. That explained why the mage had been sleeping so peacefully. Those two huskborn with the clubs must have been hers, just like the hat and the carpet.

“Ready to come back?”

The hat gave him the thumbs up and he lifted it back onto his head. Once the scarf wrapped back around his mouth and nose, he felt a lot better. He took a deep clear breath and let it out, savoring the feeling.

It took a while for his mana to recover enough for the headache and the shivering to end. During that time, because he really couldn't do much else, Nathan considered his situation. He knew there had to be a path to the next level. He also knew there would be some kind of boss, barring his way.

The girl was still missing, that was one problem. Though finding her was becoming less and less likely as time passed, he had to admit. She’d been here for a while and seemed to know this level just as well as the one below, if not better. Heck, she’d been leading him around. Maybe she’d be fine without him. It was hard to be sure either way.

The other problem was the wind. It damaged him while he traveled in it, made it impossible to navigate, and was capable of knocking him off his feet if he wasn’t careful. As long as that was the case he could only move from shelter to shelter while it was calm.
